Auto bailouts

I know updates to the blog have been sparse, and probably will for another week or so. (We're busy!)

The nerve of the big 3, to think that taxpayers owe them money. Why is there so much debate over the big 3 and the solution to their problems, when it's so painfully obvious?! Get rid of the unions, get rid of the problem. If these jerks want to keep their unions, then let them go down with the ship. I'm willing to bet that if there's a market for auto manufacturing in America, then someone will step up where these 3 failed. Let's not let these assholes swindle Washington out of our tax money! If I want to spend my money irresponsibly, I'll do so. I don't need their help.

Comrade Obama at it again

Borrowed this from Get Your Politics On!, thought I would pass it along:

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation's challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Friday night, after this new requirement was publicized and bloggers began protesting, the original wording was removed and replaced with the following:

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation's challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Was the rewording due to a change of heart? Uh... probably not. (Just out of curiosity, I have emailed President-elect Obama to see if service in a faith-based setting will count as community service.) This is a bad omen, an inadvertent tipping of the hand which makes me very, very uncomfortable for the future.

More on Obama's civilian security force

I wonder why Obama believes we need an auxiliary civilian force to protect this country. We already have the greatest military in the world, a nation wide network of police officers, sheriffs, US marshalls, and intelligence agencys such as the FBI and CIA.

But I guess thats not enough. Nope, I guess we need a new civilian force. I know it sounds like fear mongering, but how can one not have visions of Hitler's Gestapo or Ancient Rome's Praetorian Guard?

Its a slippery slope. First this force may just be used as an extra security blanket, but how long until they are kicking in doors of men and women who have disagreed with the state? All of this is coming on the heels of the Patriot Act, FISA, and talks of a national ID system.

We should all be scared.

A very scary feeling

That's right folks, a civilian national security force. You believers in the Obamessiah might not be scared, but those of us that don't see the way and the light should be afraid. Obviously he has the numbers and the charisma to pull this off.

  • From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, 20 million “dissidents”, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • In 1935 China established gun control. From1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • In 1938 Germany established gun control. From 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • What If - America 2009. President Barack Obama passes a law to severely restrict private gun ownership. Rather than submit, this sets off the Second American Revolution. Millions of lives Saved!

Get used to this...

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Mayor Michael Bloomberg is going to cut the city work force by 3,000, but that's just the beginning of the pain New Yorkers will feel as part of the fiscal crisis. A slew of new taxes are also on the agenda.

There will be 1,000 fewer cops, but the city will hire 200 more traffic agents to give out $60 million a year in new block-the-box tickets.

"The gravity of the budget situation requires us to propose both deep spending cuts and revenue increases," Bloomberg said.

The spending cuts mean reducing the city work force. The revenue increases mean taxes -- lots of taxes.

In the current fiscal year there's the 7 percent property tax hike that starts in January -- and the plan to renege on a promised $400 property tax rebate.

"I think the people of the city are going to be enraged," City Councilman Simcha Felder, D-Brooklyn, said. "They've been told the check is in the mail on the rebate."

To close budget gaps in the year that starts next July the mayor is thinking about a combination of sales tax increases and income tax hikes.

"Every city agency must push each dollar further," Bloomberg said. "We're going to do that and doing that means making hard choices that will not be popular with everyone or perhaps anyone."

The mayor proposed raising the income tax by either 7.5 percent or 15 percent.

At 7.5 percent a taxpayer making up between $50,000 and $75,000 would pay an additional $116. At 15 percent that same taxpayer would pony up an extra $233.

"When people are suffering to tell them too bad you might suffer even more next year is telling them to eat cake next year," Felder said.

Added Councilman Lewis Fidler, D-Brooklyn: "Nobody likes to raise taxes and it's not something I'm planning on doing unless I'm absolutely sure we've exhausted every other reasonable resource."

But not everyone thinks the tax hikes will help the city's finances.

"Increasing the personal income tax would be a disaster for the city," said Nicole Gelinas of the Manhattan Institute. "It's hard to overestimate that fact. We've already got the highest local personal income tax in the nation."

The mayor said he thought his proposals would generate some lively discussion with the City Council.

Council Finance Chairman David Weprin, D-Queens, said he's going to hold hearings on the tax proposals.

See if you can guess which party has been running things...

Not only are they raising taxes, but they're doing so while cutting and spending and jobs. I hope this isn't a foreshadowing of how we'll look on the federal level.

Celebs Heart Obama!

If you would like to read what the celebs are saying about Obama's win, read it here.

I'm glad that the Hollywood Elite is ecstatic, I really am. Granted, they had nothing to worry about no matter who won, what with them being multi-millionaire movie stars.

I'm sure that some of them actually really care what is going on in this country, but I think the vast majority of them just jumped on the media gravy train that was the Obama Campaign.

So while Brad Pitt and Oprah still get to live in mansions and get their photos on the cover of People, John Q. Public has to sit back and deal with the fall out from Obama's misguided tax plan.

Screw you Hollywood.

Penn Gillette Interview

A few days late, but reason.com has an interview with Penn Gillette up from November 3rd. Penn talks about Bob Barr and The Libertarian Party. Good read, so check it out.

Election woes

The American people have spoken, and clearly freedom is not the highest priority. By electing Obama, we've taken a huge step away from what the government is supposed to do; protect our liberties. Instead, we elected a pop star that promises to give us the cure to what ails us. Since when is it the government's job to give you things that are readily available, should you work for them? He promises to stop those filthy rich people from keeping all that money. Why? Because you want it? He calls his tax plan progressive, but what's so progressive about hindering progress? If I work more hours, I get taxed at a higher rate, which lowers the value of my work. Yeah, that's real progress. He won because we've lost what this country is supposed to be, a Republic. Now, votes are being used as weapons of plunder to take money away from other citizens. I, for one, don't think that's very progressive or fair.

Some Good Election News

Libertarians again top 1,000,000 votes for US House

November 5th, 2008

The Libertarian Party candidates for U.S. House will have polled over 1,000,000 votes, as soon as all the votes are counted. Preliminary figures are at 990,000, and perhaps 8% of all the votes (mostly absentees and provisionals) have not yet been counted.

The Libertarian Party also exceeded 1,000,000 for U.S. House in 2000, 2002, and 2004. It is the only minor party that has polled as many as 1,000,000 votes for U.S. House since 1914, when the Progressive Party polled 1,117,939 votes. Thanks to Greg Kaza for the 2008 calculation.
